Psalms 8:2 says “out the mouths of babes,” but my daughters (who are 13 year old twins) did more than just say it; they drew what was on their minds after hearing about, and sadly seeing, the killing of Ahmaud Arbery and most recently George Floyd. Instead of their late night ritual of watching NetFlix, and no prompting from me, they sat at our dining room table and poured (drew) out their emotions on sheets of paper. They are confused and hurt right now; therefore, I listen and share words of love, and sometimes my own words of pain. I think the best all loving parents can do for their perceptive teenagers during these unsettling times (pandemic, social-distancing, killer hornets, killings, protests and riots) is to check on them and listen and when they don’t want to do anything but just be maybe leave a pencil and paper at their bedroom door.
